About Zephyranthes simpsonii Chapm.
Zephyranthes simpsonii Chapm. is a geophytic perennial herb that reaches a maximum height of 25 cm, or 10 inches. Its dull green leaf blades grow up to 4 mm wide. The plant’s spathe measures between 1.7 cm and 4.2 cm, or 0.67 to 1.65 inches long. Its flowers are erect, with a funnel-shaped perianth that is 4 to 10 cm, or 1.6 to 3.9 inches, long. The perianth is mostly white near its base, and often takes on a pink or purple color towards its tip. The 1.4 to 4 cm, or 0.55 to 1.57 inch, perianth tube is green. The tepals diverge slightly, and are only rarely reflexed. The stamens diverge and appear equal in size; their filiform filaments are 1.5 to 3.2 cm, or 0.59 to 1.26 inches long, while the anthers measure 3 to 8 mm. The style is longer than the perianth tube, and the stigma is 3-fid, usually positioned among or below the anthers. The pedicel is either absent, or up to 1.5 cm long. Flowering occurs from February through May. This species is distributed across the southeastern United States, where it has been recorded in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, and South Carolina. It grows in peaty-sandy soil, most commonly on coastal plains and very rarely in the piedmont, at elevations ranging from 0 to 100 meters above sea level.
