About Zephyranthes bifida (Herb.) Nic.García & Meerow
Zephyranthes bifida is a bulbous, terrestrial herb that reaches 15–40 cm in height. It bears ovoid to globose bulbs, and green linear leaves that measure 15–30 cm long, 3–7 mm wide, and have an obtuse apex. For its reproductive structures, the androecium is made up of 6 stamens, the stigma is trifid, and its capsule fruit is 1.2–3 cm wide. This species is native to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, and Uruguay. Zephyranthes bifida is grown in cultivation. In the United States, plants were first imported from Argentina and popularized by a German immigrant who settled in the Texas Hill Country. From Texas, this plant was distributed across the U.S. South as an heirloom plant. The Texas cultivar, sometimes called 'Hill Country Red', typically produces dark red flowers, which gives it the common name oxblood lily; these flowers bloom in autumn with rainfall, before new leaves emerge.
