About Zale undularis Drury, 1773
This description covers Zale undularis Drury, 1773. On the upperside, the antennae are brown and thread-like. The head, body, abdomen, and all wings are a very dark brown that approaches black, with a slightly glossy appearance. All wings have slightly dentated edges. A series of black indented lines or bars runs from the base to the tip of the anterior wings. The outermost, final line in this series is thick and noticeable; it crosses the entire wing from the anterior edge to the posterior edge, about a quarter of an inch away from the external margin. The posterior wings have exactly the same markings as the anterior wings. The underside of the moth is a lighter color, and it has the same pattern of markings, though these markings are much fainter. The total wingspan of Zale undularis is approximately 2 inches, or 5 centimeters.
