About Yucca treculiana Carrière
Yucca treculiana Carrière is a species of flowering plant in the family Asparagaceae. It is native to Texas, southern New Mexico, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas. Its common names are Spanish dagger, Spanish bayonet, Trecul's Yucca, and Don Quixote's lance. This is a large, tree-like yucca that can reach up to 10 m (33 feet) tall, and it often produces branches above ground. Its leaves grow up to 128 cm (50 inches) long. The flowers are cream-colored, sometimes with a purple tinge. The fruits are fleshy and succulent, reaching up to 19 cm (7.5 inches) in length. Over the last three generations, this species has experienced a 30 percent population decline caused by habitat loss. Some sources classify this species under the name Yucca spinosa Kunth. However, the type specimen for Yucca spinosa Kunth held at the Berlin herbarium is actually a member of the genus Dasylirion, which means the name Yucca spinosa Kunth is a nomen confusum.
