About Yucca rostrata Engelm. ex Trel.

Yucca rostrata Engelm. ex Trel., commonly known as beaked yucca, is a tree-like species in the genus Yucca. It is native to Texas in the United States, as well as the Chihuahua and Coahuila regions of Mexico. This yucca grows naturally in arid areas with low annual rainfall, specifically in Bw desert climates and Bs steppe or semiarid climates. Yucca rostrata has a trunk that can reach up to 4.5 meters in height, topped with a crown of leaves. Its leaves are thin and stiff, growing up to 60 centimeters long but rarely exceeding 15 millimeters wide, and taper to a sharp point at the tip. It produces a large 100-centimeter-tall panicle inflorescence holding white flowers. As one of the hardiest trunk-forming yuccas, Yucca rostrata can be grown successfully outdoors as far cold as USDA hardiness zone 5. It is particularly popular in Southwestern United States desert cities including Palm Springs, California, Phoenix, Arizona, and Las Vegas, Nevada. It is also commonly cultivated in gardens in zones 7 and 8 in El Paso, Texas, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Salt Lake City, Utah, and Denver, Colorado. More recently, Yucca rostrata has been used for beach landscaping in coastal East Coast areas in zones 7 and 8, and can be found growing in coastal North Carolina, Virginia Beach, Virginia, Ocean City, Maryland, Long Island, New York, and coastal Connecticut. In Southern Europe, Yucca rostrata is cultivated across the subtropical Mediterranean region, including southern Italy, Spain, Greece, and southern France. It is also cultivated in smaller numbers further north in temperate European areas such as the United Kingdom and Germany. Cultivation of Yucca rostrata outside the drier Mediterranean climates of Europe is often more difficult, due to the cool summers and consistent wet conditions found in these regions. Many gardeners in the cooler, wetter areas of Northwest Europe cover Yucca rostrata over winter to keep excess moisture away from the plant. Yucca rostrata is also popular in Australia, where it is occasionally used as a specimen plant in residential home landscapes.
