About Xylotrechus colonus (Fabricius, 1775)

Xylotrechus colonus is a species of beetle belonging to the family Cerambycidae, subfamily Cerambycinae, and tribe Clytini. Its common names are the rustic borer and the rustic borer beetle. This species was first described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1775. The larvae of Xylotrechus colonus feed on the sapwood of oaks of the genus Quercus, while adult beetles feed on nectar from goldenrod of the genus Solidago and other composite flowers. The wing covers of this beetle are black, with variable grey bands and a sinuous yellow marking close to the base. The underside of the beetle is black, with faint yellow banding. Xylotrechus colonus is most commonly found in the eastern half of the United States, occurring roughly from central Texas northward.
