About Xylocopa frontalis (Olivier, 1789)

Xylocopa frontalis (Olivier, 1789) is a species of solitary carpenter bee. This species plays a vital role in the pollination of both wild and cultivated large-flowering plants. X. frontalis is known to select nesting locations very carefully. A study investigating this species' nesting site selection found that its nesting substrates and sites have a clumped spatial distribution. The species has preferred nesting substrates, and builds the majority of its nests on these preferred materials. This pattern confirms that X. frontalis actively chooses specific nesting sites, rather than nesting in any available location. Ecologically, Xylocopa frontalis and Xylocopa grisescens are the main pollinators of Passiflora edulis, an economically important tropical crop.
