About Xylocopa augusti Lepeletier, 1841
Xylocopa augusti, a carpenter bee first described by Lepeletier in 1841, reaches a body length of approximately 25 to 30 millimetres (0.98 to 1.18 inches). These are large, robust carpenter bees with a black body integument, marked by noticeable lateral ferruginous setae. Their wings are dark brown and have violet iridescence. Males of this species are tawny in color, and have two tufts of setae on the ventral surface of the metatibia. Adults of Xylocopa augusti can be encountered from December through March. This species nests in wood and tree trunks, and occurs naturally in Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
