About Xanthia icteritia Hufnagel, 1766

Technical description and variation: The forewing of Xanthia icteritia is pale yellow, with markings matching those of Xanthia togata. However, three features of this species are prominently dark brown: the cloud on the costa beyond the submarginal line, the costal end of the median shade, and the subbasal costal blotch. The dark blotch at the base of the reniform stigma has a pale centre, and the fringe is yellow. The head and shoulders are pale yellow, and the hindwing is whitish. The form flavescens Esp. is unicolorous, with all brown lines and shading absent. Lines and edges of the stigmata are sometimes marked by slender, faint rufous lines, with only the lower end of the reniform stigma remaining deep brown, and the fringes reddish brown. An intermediate form also occurs, in which markings are pale reddish brown, either distinct or faint, and approaching the other forms. The form asiatica Hmps., found from the Sir Daria region, has forewings that are more orange yellow with dark brown markings, lacks the antemedian and postmedian costal patches, and has dark brown fringe tips.
