About Vulpicida pinastri (Scop.) J.-E.Mattsson & M.J.Lai

Vulpicida pinastri, commonly called powdered sunshine, is a foliose lichen species belonging to the family Parmeliaceae. This lichen has a greenish-yellow thallus and dorsiventral lobes. It grows on conifers and Betula (birch) across North America and Eurasia. It is the only sorediate species in the genus Vulpicida, and can be distinguished by its bright-yellow marginal soralia. Originally described by Italian naturalist Giovanni Antonio Scopoli in 1772, it was transferred to the newly created genus Vulpicida by Jan-Eric Mattson and Ming-Jou Lai in 1993. In Iceland, V. pinastri grows on the stems and branches of downy birch. It is only found in a small number of locations in Iceland's Eastern Region, and is classified locally as an endangered (EN) species.
