Vriesea platynema Gaudich. is a plant species that belongs to the genus Vriesea. This species is native to the West Indies and South America. Three varieties of Vriesea platynema are currently recognized. Vriesea platynema var. flava Reitz is found in the State of Santa Catarina, Brazil. Vriesea platynema var. platynema is distributed across Cuba, Jamaica, Trinidad, Venezuela (including the Venezuelan Antilles), Guyana, Brazil, and Misiones Province of Argentina. Vriesea platynema var. wrightii (L.B.Sm.) L.B.Sm. occurs in Cuba.
