About Vriesea friburgensis Mez
Vriesea friburgensis Mez is a plant species belonging to the genus Vriesea. It is an epiphytic species native to Bolivia, Paraguay, Argentina, and Brazil. Three varieties of this species are currently recognized. Vriesea friburgensis var. friburgensis is found in eastern and southern Brazil. Vriesea friburgensis var. paludosa (L.B.Sm.) L.B.Sm. occurs in southeastern Brazil, ranging from São Paulo to Rio Grande do Sul. Vriesea friburgensis var. tucumanensis (Mez) L.B.Sm. is distributed across most of the entire species' total range. In terms of its ecology, the large infructescences of Vriesea friburgensis dry out and can remain standing for one year or longer. During this period, the standing dry infructescences host a variety of insect species and other arthropods. Several species of ants, termites, and bees build their nests within these dry fruiting structures. Surveys have confirmed ant nests from the genera Camponotus, Pseudomyrmex, and Solenopsis, and termite nests from the genera Cortaritermes and Velocitermes in these structures. Additional organisms that inhabit these dry infructescences include giant butterfly-moths, hoverflies, beetles, pseudoscorpions, springtails, and spiders.
