About Volkameria inermis L.
Botany: Volkameria inermis L. is typically a shrub 1 to 4 metres tall, but can grow into a tree reaching up to 10 metres in height. It has woody, smooth stems. Its leaves are arranged alternately; each leaf blade is elliptical, 1.5 to 4 centimetres long, with a smooth surface and dark green underside. Its flowers are trumpet-shaped with white petals 1.5 to 4 cm long, and have long reddish or purple stamens. Flowers grow in clusters, with each individual flower having 3 to 7 petals joined at the base. Its fruit is round or egg-shaped, 1 cm long, and changes from green to black when ripe. When the fruit dries, it splits into 4 lobes with thick corky walls. This species flowers and produces fruit from July to December, and its fruits ripen in March. Uses: The plant parts of this species have multiple medicinal properties. Seeds and roots are used to treat venom from bites by some fish and other marine animals.
