Adult blue-black grassquits (Volatinia jacarina) measure 10.2 cm (4.0 inches) in length and weigh 9.3 g (0.33 ounces). They have a slender, conical black bill. Breeding adult males have glossy blue-black body plumage, paired with black wings and a black tail; the white inner surface of their underwings can be seen when they are in flight or performing displays. Female and immature blue-black grassquits have brown upperparts and buff-colored underparts marked with dark streaks.
