About Viola walteri House

Viola walteri, commonly known as the prostrate blue violet, is a perennial flowering plant belonging to the violet family Violaceae. It is native to the southeastern and Appalachian regions of North America. Across its entire native range, the species is generally uncommon, and its northern populations are fragmented. This violet grows in rich calcareous forests and woodlands, frequently occurring in dry rocky locations. It is a spring ephemeral, and produces flowers from March through May each year. The species is set apart from related violets by its creeping, rooting stolons. This growth form is thought to indicate that Viola walteri is a transitional species between caulescent and acaulescent violets. Viola walteri closely resembles Viola appalachiensis, which was formerly classified as a variety of Viola walteri.
