About Viola purpurea Kellogg

Viola purpurea Kellogg is a small plant with thick to fleshy, oval leaves that have toothed or ridged edges. Most leaves are green, but they may carry a purplish tint, and they feature prominent indented veins. Its flowers are made up of bright yellow petals: the lowermost petal has purple streaks or veins, and the lateral petals have purplish undersides. This violet species grows in foothills and mountains across much of the western United States. Its documented range includes the Cascade Mountains, California's coastal ranges and Sierra Nevada, and the Rocky Mountains. In the Wenatchee Mountains of Washington State, it is notably common on serpentine soils.
