About Viola pinetorum Greene

Viola pinetorum Greene is a species of violet that has several common names: goosefoot violet, goosefoot yellow violet, gray-leaved violet, and mountain yellow violet. This species is endemic to California, growing in mountain ranges across the state. It can be found in a variety of mountain habitat types, including forests and talus. This herbaceous plant grows from a tough taproot and produces an erect or decumbent stem that reaches up to approximately 22 centimeters in length. Its leaves range in shape from linear to oval, have pointed tips and toothed edges, and the longest leaves grow between 15 and 20 centimeters long. A single solitary flower grows on a long, upright stem. The flower has five yellow petals: the three lower petals are marked with brownish purple veins, and the two upper petals have brownish purple coloring on their outer surfaces.
