About Viola cucullata Aiton

Viola cucullata Aiton, commonly called the purple violet, is a low-growing perennial herbaceous plant that reaches a maximum height of 20 cm (8 in). Its leaves grow in a basal cluster; the leaves are simple, grow up to 10 cm (4 in) broad, have crenate-serrate margins, and are attached to long petioles. The flowers of this species are violet or dark blue, and they are occasionally white, with five petals per flower. The fruit is a capsule 10โ€“15 mm (3โ„8โ€“5โ„8 in) long. When the capsule reaches maturity, it splits into three sections to release the many small seeds it contains. This plant grows in habitats including wet meadows, prairies, and fields.
