Vespula alascensis (Packard, 1870), commonly called the Alaska yellowjacket or American yellowjacket, is a species of yellowjacket that lives in North America. This species was first formally named in 1870. Until 2010, it was classified as a taxonomic synonym of the closely related species Vespula vulgaris. It is currently recognized as a separate distinct taxon. It typically builds its nests underground.
