It holds the status of county flower of Montgomeryshire, located in the United Kingdom. Common cultivated varieties of this species include the blue-flowered 'Royal Candles', red-flowered 'Red Fox', and white-flowered 'Noah Williams'. It has been a protected species in the UK since 1975, protected under the Conservation of Wild Creatures and Wild Plants Act.
