About Velarifictorus micado (Saussure, 1877)

Velarifictorus micado, commonly called the Japanese burrowing cricket, is a species of cricket classified in the subfamily Gryllinae, which belongs to the family Gryllidae. This species is native to southern Asia, and has an introduced population in the United States. It was first documented in the United States in 1959, and it most likely arrived there as overwintering eggs in soil carried with imported plants. Since its introduction, V. micado has spread across the entire eastern half of the United States. V. micado is currently considered quite passive and non-destructive. However, research shows that its range has expanded northward, and the species may be far more invasive than scientists previously believed.
