About Vaccinium darrowii Camp
Vaccinium darrowii Camp is an evergreen shrub that reaches 30 to 120 cm (1 to 4 ft) in height. It produces small, simple ovoid-acute leaves that measure 10 to 15 millimetres (3โ8โ5โ8 in) long. In non-hybrid plants, leaves are light blue-green at the base of the plant, and light pink at the tips of the branches. Its flowers are white, bell-shaped, and 4โ8 mm long. The fruit is a blue-black berry 4โ6 mm (1โ8โ1โ4 in) in diameter, covered with a whitish waxy bloom. This species has a cytology of 2n = 24. Vaccinium darrowii is native to the Southeastern United States, where it occurs naturally in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi. Its primary habitat is pine forests, where it prefers full sun and the slightly acidic soils typical of this environment. It is cultivated both for its edible berries and as an ornamental plant for horticultural use in home gardens, native plant gardens, wildlife gardens, and natural landscaping projects.
