About Utricularia vulgaris L.

Utricularia vulgaris, commonly known as greater bladderwort or common bladderwort, is an aquatic bladderwort species native to Asia and Europe. This plant is free-floating and rootless. Its stems can grow to over one metre long within a single growing season; in winter, the stems die back and form turions. The leaves are finely pinnately divided, measure between one and eight centimetres long, and bear numerous bladder-shaped traps. Yellow flowers grow on stalks that extend above the water surface, blooming between April and August. In eastern Asia and North America, the related species Utricularia macrorhiza occupies the ecological niche this species fills elsewhere.
