About Urtica sykesii Grosse-Veldm. & Weigend
Urtica sykesii is a perennial herbaceous species with both male and female flowers on the same individual, growing between 0.15โ0.60 meters (5.9 inches to 1 foot 11.6 inches) tall, with an erect growth habit. Its stems bear stinging hairs (trichomes) that are 0.2โ0.3 mm long. The leaf petioles measure 30โ70 mm, while the leaf blades measure 20โ60 mm in length and 20โ50 mm in width. Leaf margins are regularly toothed. This species can flower year-round, and its flower clusters (inflorescences) grow 10โ20 mm long. Its fruits are rounded, with a length of 1.3โ1.5 mm. Urtica sykesii is native to Australia and New Zealand. Within Australia, it is found only in the state of Victoria. Within New Zealand, it occurs on both the North Island and the South Island. A 2023 assessment under the New Zealand Threat Classification System rated this species as "Not Threatened". It typically grows on moist soil in rocky areas, at elevations ranging from 0 to 560 meters (0 to 1,837 feet) above sea level. All species in the Urtica genus are pollinated by wind.
