About Urochloa fusca (Sw.) B.F.Hansen & Wunderlin
Urochloa fusca, commonly known as browntop signalgrass, is a wild grass species. Its native range stretches from Paraguay in South America to the southern United States, including the states of Alabama, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, New Mexico, Texas, and Oklahoma. It currently occurs as a weed in Australia. This species is diploid, has a base chromosome number of 9, and uses the PCK enzymatic subtype of C4 photosynthesis. According to a molecular phylogeny of the genus Urochloa, the closest relatives of U. fusca are Urochloa arizonica and Urochloa mollis. The Joint Genome Institute is currently sequencing the genome of U. fusca. Ecologically, U. fusca prefers moist, disturbed areas located at low elevations.
