About Uapaca kirkiana Müll.Arg.
Uapaca kirkiana, commonly called sugar plum or mahobohobo, is a dioecious plant species in the family Phyllanthaceae. It is native to the southern Afrotropics, where it grows in well-watered miombo woodlands. Across its native range, it is one of the most popular wild fruits. It is rarely cultivated, but existing trees are retained when land is cleared for other uses. It remains a traditional food plant in Africa, and this little-known fruit has potential to improve nutrition, increase food security, support rural development, and sustain land care management. In the Shona language, the fruit is called mazhanje, and it is called masuku in Chichewa. This species grows in the miombo woodlands of Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, southern Burundi, Tanzania, Malawi, central and northern Mozambique, and Zimbabwe.
