This species, Tulipa patens C.Agardh ex Schult. & Schult.f., is a bulb-forming perennial plant. It produces narrow blue-grey leaves, and typically bears 1 or 2 flowers per stem. Stems can grow up to 50 cm (20 inches) tall. Its scented yellow flowers, which sometimes have a red tinge on the outer surfaces, bloom between April and May. The plant is rarely able to produce seed, and its flowers are pollinated by small insects. It grows naturally in dry grassy areas and woodland copses.
