About Tulipa dasystemon (Regel) Regel
Tulipa dasystemon (Regel) Regel most often has a small bulb with a dark, papery tunic. It grows two pairs of linear green leaves, which reach up to 15 cm long and around 1.5 cm wide. The second pair of leaves is typically longer and narrower than the first pair. Its yellow tepals grow up to 3 cm long and 1 cm wide; the three outer tepals have greenish-yellow or dull purple coloring on their outer surface. Both the anthers and filaments are yellow. Populations previously classified under the synonym Tulipa neustruevae have firmer bulb tunics, glossier leaves, and brighter yellow flowers. This species is native to central Asia, found in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Xinjiang, China. It grows on sunny slopes at altitudes up to 3,200 m. Populations previously described as Tulipa neustruevae occur at lower altitudes. Tulipa dasystemon has often been misidentified in cultivation. At one point, bulbs sold under this name were actually a similar, distinct species called Tulipa urumiensis, which also has the synonym Tulipa tarda. True bulbs of this species are also cultivated under the name Tulipa neustruevae. In England, it is recommended to grow this plant in an alpine house or bulb frame.
