About Trite planiceps Simon, 1899

Trite planiceps Simon, 1899 has adult males and females with a total body length that ranges from 6 to 13.5 mm. Its cephalothorax and first pair of legs are solid jet black. The species has an elongated abdomen that is golden brown, marked with a central yellow stripe, and sometimes displays a greenish sheen. Males of this species have an elongated first pair of legs, a row of dark hairs positioned above their frontal eyes, and more robust chelicerae, the mouthpart structures. This species is endemic to New Zealand, where it is widespread across the North Island, South Island, and Stewart Island. It frequently lives on flax plants of the genus Phormium and cabbage trees of the genus Cordyline, and is also commonly found around human homes.
