The Mexican lyre snake, Trimorphodon tau Cope, 1870, is a medium-sized, nocturnal snake that reaches a maximum total length of 1 meter from snout to tail. Its body is light brown, with darker brown saddle-shaped markings along its back. Like other lyre snakes, this species feeds primarily on lizards. T. tau is distributed across the coastal side of the Sierra Madre Occidental, the main range of the Sierra Madre Occidental, the Sierra Madre Del Sur, the Mexican Plateau, and the Mesa de Oaxaca. It prefers semi-arid to seasonally dry habitats, and can be found in vegetated or rocky areas within these environments.
