About Trichonephila senegalensis (Walckenaer, 1841)
Trichonephila senegalensis (Walckenaer, 1841) is a species of spider in the family Araneidae. It is endemic to Africa and is commonly known as the banded-legged golden orb-web spider. This species is distributed across the region from West Africa to Ethiopia. One of its subspecies, Trichonephila senegalensis annulata, is widespread across the entire African continent. In South Africa, the species is commonly found across all nine provinces of the country, and occurs in more than 10 protected areas there. In South Africa, this species lives at altitudes ranging from 16 to 1,864 meters above sea level. It has been recorded in all South African biomes except the Desert and Succulent Karoo biomes. Trichonephila senegalensis builds large orb webs, which measure 1 to 1.5 meters in diameter. These webs have a yellowish golden viscid spiral.
