About Treron phoenicopterus (Latham, 1790)
The yellow-footed green pigeon, scientifically named Treron phoenicopterus, is also commonly called the yellow-legged green pigeon. It is a widespread green pigeon species native to the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. This species is the state bird of Maharashtra. It has different local names across regions: it is called Haroli or Hariyal in Marathi, Haitha in Upper Assam, and Haitol in Lower Assam. Yellow-footed green pigeons feed on fruit, including many species from the Ficus genus, and forage in flocks. They are habitat generalists. In early mornings, they are frequently seen sunning on the tops of emergent trees in dense forest areas, most often Banyan trees, but they have also been observed in remaining natural patches within urban areas. Their current population trend is increasing. This species currently exists across Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
