About Tramea onusta Hagen, 1861

Tramea onusta, commonly called the red-mantled saddlebags or red saddlebags, is a species of skimmer dragonfly that occurs in North America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Its wings are translucent with red veins, and feature characteristic dark red blotches at their proximal base. This marking gives the dragonfly the appearance of carrying saddlebags when in flight. The last two abdominal bands and the cerci of this species are black. Females typically have light brown or pale orange bodies, and have lighter white and brown eyes. Males have a distinctive red body color. This dragonfly has a wide distribution across North America: in the west, it is found south of San Francisco, and in the east it is found south of the Great Lakes. Its range extends as far south as Nicaragua and Puerto Rico.
