About Tramea loewii Kaup, 1866

Tramea loewii is a medium to large dragonfly, with an average length of 45 mm and an average wingspan of 85 mm. Its synthorax has yellowish to brown stripes set against a purplish background. Male individuals of this species have a red abdomen, with black markings on the final two segments. Female Tramea loewii are dull brown in overall color. A key identifying feature of the species is the presence of dark patches at the base of the hindwings; these patches are red in males and brown in females. Tramea loewii is very similar in appearance to Tramea stenoloba, which differs by having a darker synthorax and larger genital dimensions. Tramea loewii lives in a wide variety of still water habitats including ponds and swamps, and it may breed multiple times throughout a single year. Within Australia, this dragonfly is widespread across the continent, with the only exception being the far south-western region.
