About Tramea limbata (Desjardins, 1835)

Description and habitat: Tramea limbata is a medium-sized red dragonfly with extremely long anal appendages. It can be told apart from other species in the genus Tramea by the dark-brown patch at the base of its hind-wing, which is not surrounded by a golden yellow areola. Females are similar in overall form to males; they may be red matching the male's color, or yellowish. This species reproduces in open pools, ponds, and grassy marshes. Adults are often found in bushy areas and woodlands surrounding these reproductive habitats. On sunny days, this dragonfly is commonly seen patrolling over water bodies and open areas. Pairs that are either copulating or in tandem can also sometimes be observed flying low above water bodies. Distribution: This migratory species is widespread across sub-Saharan Africa (including Madagascar), the southern Arabian Peninsula, southern Asia, and nearby islands.
