It is native to North America, where it occurs scattered across the southeastern United States. Its natural habitat consists of rocky calcareous woodlands and prairies. This species is well known for its intensely painful stinging hairs. It can be easily told apart from other eastern Tragia species by its vining growth habit and large, heart-shaped leaves.
