About Tradescantia zanonia (L.) Sw.
Tradescantia zanonia (L.) Sw., previously classified as Campelia zanonia, is an evergreen perennial subshrub that belongs to the dayflower family. It is closely related to Tradescantia zebrina. This species is native to tropical Americas, with its natural distribution extending from Mexico, through Central America and the Caribbean, all the way to Bolivia and southern Brazil. Its common names are cañagria, cascajo flor, cinta, rascadera, and suelda. The capsule of Tradescantia zanonia is covered by a fleshy purple-black calyx, which gives the fruit a berry-like appearance. It is grown as an ornamental plant in greenhouses, and there is a variegated cultivar of this species called 'Mexican Flag'.
