It is native primarily to the interior highlands of the United States, with a separate disjunct population located in Alabama. It can also be found growing in Arkansas, Mississippi, Missouri, and Oklahoma. It is a perennial herbaceous plant that bears purple or blue flowers in spring on its herbaceous stems.
