About Trachymyrmex septentrionalis (McCook, 1881)

Trachymyrmex septentrionalis (McCook, 1881) is a species of ant that belongs to the subfamily Myrmicinae. It is the northernmost species within the tribe Attini. This species is common in the eastern United States, where it lives in sandy soils. It is the most widely distributed fungus-growing ant in the United States, with a range extending from Texas to Florida, and northward to Illinois, Ohio, and New York. While the species has been recorded as present in Durango, Mexico, these records very likely refer instead to the closely similar species Trachymyrmex carinatus.
