About Toxeus magnus (Saito, 1933)

Toxeus magnus is a jumping spider species that belongs to the genus Toxeus. It is endemic to Taiwan and Southeast Asia. Originally described in 1933 by Saitō in his publication Notes on the spiders from Formosa, the species was first classified within the genus Myrmarachne. It was later reclassified into the genus Toxeus by Polish arachnologist Jerzy Prószyński in November 2016. This species is well known for being a non-mammalian animal that nourishes its offspring through a lactation-like process. It also displays unusual social behavior for a spider. Out of nearly 48,000 known spider species, only around 120 are known to tolerate sharing space with other spiders, including their own siblings, for longer than three weeks, and only around 30 known spider species have lifelong social lifestyles.
