About Tonella tenella (Benth.) Jeps.
Tonella tenella (Benth.) Jeps. is one of just two herbaceous species that belong to the genus Tonella. This genus has recently been reclassified as a member of the plant family Plantaginaceae. This species goes by the common names lesser baby innocence and small-flowered tonella. It is a small annual herb that grows an erect stem reaching up to 30 centimeters in height. Its flowers are very tiny, only a few millimeters across. The corolla structure has four petal lobes positioned on one side, and one larger petal lobe on the opposite side. The lobed petals are white, marked with blue or purple spots or streaks, and surround four white stamens. It grows in the forest understory, most often in scrub oak habitat, on moist rocky soil. Its native range stretches from southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, south to San Benito County, California.
