About Tolumnia variegata (Sw.) Braem
Tolumnia variegata (Sw.) Braem is a stoloniferous orchid species with flattened pseudobulbs, and individual plants vary in size. Its leaves are long with pointed tips, measuring approximately 12 cm (4.7 in) long and 1.5 cm (0.59 in) wide. The inflorescence can reach up to 40 cm (16 in) long and bears up to 30 flowers. Flowers of this species are highly variable in size, shape, and colour; they are usually white (sometimes pink), with a yellow column and brown to purple spots on the labellum. This species is native to the Cayman Islands (specifically Grand Cayman), Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands, and the United States Virgin Islands. It grows in both moist and dry forests at all elevations except the highest, and it is the most widely distributed member of the genus Tolumnia. Tolumnia variegata is an epiphyte that grows on the branches of trees and shrubs, including calabash, guava, citrus, and coffee plants. Its flowering occurs in both spring and fall.
