Nomenclature and Etymology
Thysanotus tuberosus, commonly called the common fringe-lily, is a perennial herb that is endemic to Australia. Its species epithet tuberosus refers to the crisp-tasting edible root of this plant.
Leaf Morphology
Its leaves are linear in shape, and have a round cross-section near the tip.
Mature Plant Size
Mature plants grow between 20 cm and 60 cm in height.
Habitat Range
This species can grow in a wide range of habitats, ranging from semi-arid regions of south eastern Australia to coastal areas that receive more than 1300 mm of rainfall annually.
Preferred Habitats
It is most often found in open country, heathlands, or dry sclerophyll woodland.
Flowering Period
Flowering occurs between September and April.
Flower Characteristics
Its flowers have three purple petals with frilly edges, and each individual flower only lives for one day.
Floral Distinction
It is counted among the more colorful wildflowers native to south eastern Australia.
