About Tholera cespitis (Denis & Schiffermüller), 1775
Technical description and variation: The wingspan of Tholera cespitis ranges from 34 to 40 mm. Its forewings are dark earth brown, and can appear iridescent purplish blue under some lighting conditions. The forewing lines are indistinct; the inner and outer lines are black with paler edges. The submarginal line is pale, with black wedge-shaped spots positioned before it. The claviform stigma is obscure and black-edged. The orbicular stigma is roundish, brown, and marked with a pale ring. The reniform stigma is large, with a paler outline, particularly along its outer edge. The hindwing is whitish with dark veins, and has a diffusely brownish terminal area. In male individuals, the hindwing is white, with only a narrow grey terminal band. The form ab. ferruginea Hofm., found in Carinthia and the Tyrol, is much paler and has a reddish-yellow tint.
