It is native to Mexico, Central America, Cuba, Colombia, and Venezuela, and has been introduced to southeastern China. This plant is an evergreen shrub or small tree that grows in forests, reaching up to 3 meters (10 feet) in height. It is planted as a street tree in Nicaragua and Colombia.
