About Thamnosma montana Torr. & Frém.

This species, Thamnosma montana Torr. & Frém., is a shrub that produces many stems that are rarely branched, roughly straight, and broom-like. The stems are yellow-green and grow 30 to 60 centimeters long. The shrub is typically leafless; leaves only develop and persist for several weeks after heavy soaking rains that penetrate the ground. Its peak flowering occurs in March, with particularly prominent flowering in wet years. It grows in dry desert scrub, juniper woodland, and other desert plant communities. It often grows alongside other desert plants, including creosote, blackbrush, ephedra, and Yucca species such as Joshua Tree. Native American groups use this plant as a ceremonial drug, as a medicine, and for additional other purposes.
