About Thalpophila matura (Hufnagel, 1766)

Technical description and variation: The wingspan of Thalpophila matura ranges from 38 to 46 mm. The forewing is grey-brown with darker dusting and suffusion; veins toward the termen are pale grey. A slight rufous tinge runs longitudinally along both folds, becoming more conspicuous at the outer edge of the reniform stigma. The inner and outer lines are black, with pale edging on the opposite sides. The submarginal is obscurely pale, indented on each fold, and preceded by a dark shade. All three stigmata have black edges, with their centers more or less tinged with rufous; the orbicular and reniform stigmata have an obscure pale ring. The hindwing is straw yellow, with a broad fuscous terminal border that becomes wider at the apex. In the form texta Esp., the forewing is darker and duller, with all paler markings completely obscured.
