About Tettigonia cantans (Fuessly, 1775)
Adults of Tettigonia cantans differ in size by sex: males grow 20โ30 mm (0.79โ1.18 in) long, while females reach 29โ35 mm (1.1โ1.4 in) long. The body usually has a basic green coloration, with a brown stripe running along its back. This species of bush cricket rarely flies, and its wings are shorter and wider than those of other species in the genus Tettigonia, only slightly covering the end of the abdomen. The female's ovipositor extends past the tip of the wings. Tettigonia cantans is distributed across most of Europe, the eastern Palearctic realm, the Near East, and North Africa, with its range stretching from the Pyrenees to China. In the Mediterranean region, this species is only found at higher elevations in mountains. It is absent from most areas of Western Europe, including Great Britain, western France, and most of the Iberian Peninsula. Tettigonia cantans lives in moist to moderately dry, fairly cool habitats including fens, marshes, tall herb vegetation, mountain meadows, clearcuts, and woodland edges. It has also been observed in potato fields, and on mountainous, nutrient-poor dry limestone grasslands that host tall growing vegetation.
