About Tetradymia comosa A.Gray

Tetradymia comosa A.Gray is a whitish, woolly shrub that reaches 30 centimeters (12 inches) to over 1 meter (3.3 feet) in height. Its leaves are lance-shaped, growing up to 6 centimeters long, and become rigid as they age; sometimes their tips harden into spines. Its inflorescence holds three to six flower heads, each of which is enclosed by five or six thick phyllaries covered in white woolly hairs. Each flower head contains five to nine yellow or brownish flowers, each around one centimeter long. The plant produces a small, hairy achene as its fruit. This species is native to the Transverse Ranges and Peninsular Ranges of Southern California (United States) and northern Baja California (Mexico). It grows in local chaparral and woodland habitats, including coastal sage scrub and montane chaparral and woodlands.
