About Terinos clarissa Boisduval, 1836
Terinos clarissa Boisduval, 1836 is an Indomalayan butterfly belonging to the family Nymphalidae, subfamily Heliconiinae. Its larvae feed on plants of the genera Homalium and Rinorea.
On the upper side of its wings, males have a striking velvety blue-violet lustre. T. clarissa resembles T. clarissa malayana (plate 108 c) on the upper side, but the distal margin of its hindwing is yellowish red and not quite as broad. The dominant wing color of females is black. The base of the female forewing is dark blue, with a narrow median band of the same dark blue color. The female hindwing is yellow toward the anal angle, with a faint reddish tinge on the proximal portion. The yellowish anal border is bounded by an oblique blue intermedian band, and the anal area also has two indistinct crescents plus two circular violet patches.
On the underside of the wings, males are red-brown, with white longitudinal bands that carry a faint violet tinge, and a strongly undulate reddish-yellow submarginal fascia. This submarginal fascia is present in all subspecies of the species. Females are primarily gray on the underside, with a whitish anal area and a pale yellow submarginal band.
